I've never been to Algeciras or the Rock of Gibraltar, and I'm sure it wasn't just me that was surprised to learn that the former is more or less due west of the latter. They're approximately 7 km (4 miles) apart, separated by the Bay of Gibraltar (Spanish: Bahia de Algeciras). The Spanish 'mainland' extends for approximately 10 km (6 miles) further south, to the Punta de Tarifa - about 20 km (12 miles) south-west of Algeciras. The Straits of Gibraltar are about 15 km (9 miles) wide; Morocco's northernmost coastline is south-east of the Punta de Tarifa, about 25 km (15 miles) due south of Algeciras and the Rock.
